A majority of Toyota and Honda dealerships reported last year not having a single EV available for sale on their lots. In fact, a lot of models from a lot of manufacturers do quite well. As we discussed above, the car inventory shortage has been largely caused by the larger automotive chip shortage, which started in 2020 due to the pandemic. Toyota and Honda, however, were among the worst offenders in terms of availability, with only 15% and 11%, respectively, having one available for sale. Mercedes-Benz had the best EV availability among car brands, per Sierra Club - 90% of its dealerships reported having an EV available. The other half indicated they weren't interested in doing so. Last year, Honda launched new generations of four of its most popular vehicles the HR-V, CR-V, Pilot and Accord and revealed its first electric. Interestingly, of the 801 dealerships surveyed from June to November 2022 that did not have an EV for sale, they were divided: Nearly half said they would be willing to sell electric. The Associated Press reports that computer chip shortages as well as a lack of other automotive parts continued to hobble the U.S. Two-thirds of car dealerships in the US did not have a single new or used EV on their lots, according to a survey by the environmental nonprofit Sierra Club. Yet even for those car shoppers that are eager to drive electric, it's hard to get your hands on one.
